I am preparing for the fall quilting retreat, which is November 2nd through the 5th. Although I am really looking forward to it, I am a little apprehensive about leaving the kids. John is a gem and is perfectly capable of taking care of the kids, he is such a wonderful Dad. It is just that I am going to miss them terribly. The retreat is being held in a village nearby, about a half an hour away so at least I know that they can come for a visit if need be. The fall retreat is being held in Bad Herrenalb located in the Black Forest. I love going to the retreats. The retreats afford the time I need to complete my UFO's (unfinished objects) and
any Christmas gifts that need completing. Lately it is really the only time I have allotted for quilting. The retreats also give me some time to rejuvenate. The spring retreat is always held at the Kloster Schontal, which I went to for the first time last April. It is an absolutely beautiful monastery that has been turned into a hotel, but is still owned and maintained by the church. It has the most gorgeous cathedral I have ever seen. It is well preserved and truly a hidden treasure. The staff gave us a private tour of the offices and cathedral. The offices have beautifully well preserved painted walls, actual paintings, painted on the walls. These paintings date back to the 1600's and are amazingly well preserved with absolutely no special treatments attempted to keep them preserved. It makes you wonder about the museums procedures for preserving. The rooms at the monastery were actually the monks former bedrooms and had conservative decor, but were modern and clean. Can't wait to go again next year. When the monks occupied the Kloster they worked the fields and grounds and were also allotted 2 liters of wine a day. One wonders how they got anything do
ne.
The projects I am working on for this retreat are Lexi's quilt, my Mom and Dad's UCLA tailgating quilt, an American Flag quilt for one of my Aunt's and Uncle's a needlepoint pillow for Anika and my hand applique Baltimore Album blocks. If anyone is familiar with Baltimore Album, well I should be done with that quilt in about 20 years. No, I am not kidding. I will work on Alexander's quilt, Baby Garcia's quilt (Mel & Brian's), John and Shirl's quilt at Kloster Schontal for the spring retreat. I have got to get Lexi's quilt done, because she keeps asking why she doesn't have a q
uilt yet and Anika does.
I am posting some photos of my finished projects which happen to be Anika's quilt, an Americana sampler wall hanging, an American Flag quilt which I made for my parents and a needlepoint pillow. I am attempting to make a pillow for each place we live in the world with the dates on the back. I am also posting some photos of the Kloster from last April, a must see.
